And, being parents themselves, they have designed a schedule to be as accommodating as possible. Things like early drop-off, 5PM pick-up and single or multi-day registration. Tommy Ostendorf

Tommy Ostendorf has been an El Segundo resident for over 5 years. He grew up in Manhattan Beach and strives to preserve both the beach cities and our oceans. After graduating from USD with a degree in business management, Tommy became an operating partner at BeachSports. He has been running camps for kids in the South Bay for over 10 years and is now the sole owner of the company, taking it to the next level!

What inspired you to become a small business owner?

I think my inspiration came from an early mentor of mine, Jimmy Miller, who hired me as a surf instructor at his surf school in El Porto when I was 13. Jimmy was a passionate surfer, and he figured out a way to make a career out of doing what he loved most. I think being exposed to that entrepreneurial spirit at such a young age and seeing the growth of Jim’s business, subconsciously put me on this path.

What is the most rewarding part of your job?

For me, it’s knowing that we’re doing our part to educate the next generation of South Bay residents on the importance of preserving and respecting our local beaches and oceans. All the smiling faces of our campers, and our coaches for that matter, is pretty rewarding too

How does BeachSports differ from all the other camps out there?

We hire teachers to develop and run our programs. We offer a variety of scheduling options to accommodate both our campers and their busy parents. By hiring teachers, we’re able to follow the best practices used in classrooms to ensure safe, inclusive and educational curriculums for our campers. Our flexible scheduling and single-day options are super helpful for those who need the option of early drop-off and late pick-up.

What is your favorite thing about El Segundo and raising your little dudes in our community?

Where do I begin?! The parks are amazing, we can walk everywhere, the police and fire department are on it, so we feel totally safe, there’s no shortage of great, kid friendly, dining options and it seems like the city always has a fun event happening for families. Oh, and the parking is free! We love it here.
