Program Overview

A beachsports Camp counselor with a safety flotation device with kids at summer camp at the Ocean shore

Our OCEAN program, formerly our Jr. Lifeguard Camp, provides a relaxed and fun environment with incredibly low instructor to participant ratios of 1:6 and a small class size of only 12 campers. Although lifeguard skills are being learned and practiced, we remove the competitive elements found in other Jr. Lifeguard type programs and focus on a positive and encouraging experience for all participants.

The week is filled with activities, including morning runs, buoy swims, and paddle outs, fostering physical fitness and ocean awareness. The highlight of the program is the exhilarating skills competition and mock taplin at the end of the week. Participants showcase their newfound knowledge, fitness, and swimming abilities in a fun and friendly environment. It’s an exciting way to celebrate their achievements and the camaraderie developed throughout the week.

In addition to ocean safety, campers will also engage in beach games, boogie boarding, and body surfing during water sessions, offering a perfect balance of learning, excitement and ocean fun.

This year has been the absolute best year yet. Everyone has been amazing from pick up and drop off to the instructors! Billy has come home every day so happy. The instructors have been so playful, encouraging, and insanely fun. We booked another week this summer because it was such a magical week. Thank you for everything! – Lauren A, 2024

It’s the best! I really appreciate how each kid is treated with respect and care without pressure to get too far outside of their comfort zone—particularly great for allowing kids to get comfortable in the water at their own pace. – Alison H, 2024

Camp was a great experience for my son. He was up and ready to get there by 7:00 every morning. He loved his teachers, the games and the friends he made. – Kimberly S, 2024

I got to watch my daughter in camp for a few hours and I was very impressed. The coaches had the rotations organized so well and they were really engaged with the campers, especially in the water. My daughter had such a great time that she’s literally crying because she already misses her coaches. That tells me she had a ton of fun and felt so taken care of!

Q

How We Prioritize Safety

In an environment as dynamic as the beach and ocean it's important to identify negative or dangerous situations before they occur. In our 20+ years operating youth programs on our local beaches we've had the opportunity to experience these situations and have developed protocols for avoiding and resloving them. Below are just a few ways we act proactively to keep participants safe.

Low Coach:Participant Ratios

We maintain a ratio of at least 1 Coach per every 4 to 6 participants, depending on the program activity. This ratio does not include our Directors, who oversee all camp activites, or our Coaches-in-Training who provide additional eyes on participants.

Small group sizes

Participants enroll in small groups within each program and are assigned designated Coaches for the week. This allows Coaches and Participants to develop a close relationship ensuring focused instruction and increased safety for each Participant as Coaches are able to easily identify and manage their small group.

Lifeguard Communication

Programs are setup next to staffed lifeguard towers. Our coaches communicate daily with the lifeguard on duty to address ocean conditions and any safety concerns. Any injury that may occur will be assessed by the lifeguard on duty.

Program Rules & Conduct

Emotional safety is equally as important as physical safety at BeachSports. Bullying and innapropriate language and behavior are not tolerated and will be addressed immediately by Coaches and Directors who have been trained by professional educators to handle such situations.

Sun Protection

Multiple sunscreen reapplication breaks are scheduled throughout the day and Coaches assist with application when necessary.  All participants receive brightly colored SPF 50 lycra swim shirts/rashguards for additional sun protection and easy identification.

Trained & Vetted Staff

Our Coaches are CPR & First-Aid certified, undergo criminal background checks and complete an online training course prior to their first day of work. Each program location has a Director who oversees the program and maintains communication with our Director and Office Staff for easy parent communication.

Q

Leading By Example

We strongly believe that the quality of our program is determined by the quality of our team. We focus on finding kind, personable, energetic young adults to lead our programs and we support them with a leadership structure that ensures a positive experience for our participants, their families and every member of our team.

Did you know? Many members of our Team are former BeachSports participants themselves!

Program Director

Our Program Director, Jenn Martin, oversees all camp locations and is always available during camp hours to support Location Directors and Head Coaches and to communicate with parents. Jenn is a mother of two, a former private school teacher and D1 collegiate soccer player and is exceptionally skilled at communicating positively and effectively with our participants.  She is also responsible for the creation and evolution of our program curriculum which is based on her professional teaching experience.

On-Site Team

When you arrive on your first day at BeachSports, you'll be greeted by several smiling faces each with a specific set of responsibilities to ensure an exceptional experience for both you and your participant.

Location Directors

Each program location (MB, RB, HB) has a Location Director who oversees all programs and Coaches at that location. Parents will have a direct line of communication to the Location Director at their child's location during program hours.

Head Coaches

Your participant will be assigned a Head Coach for their Group who is responsible for implementing the program curriculum and ensuring camper safety throughout the week. Head Coaches are skilled in their respective programs and are eager to share their knowlege with their participants.

Coach + Coach-in-Training

Supporting our Head Coaches in providing a safe and fun environment are our Coaches (16 years +) and Coaches-in-Training (14+). All Coaches are CPR and First-Aid Certified and are required to complete a detailed online training prior to their first day of work.

Coach Ratios

We maintain very low Coach to participant ratios in all of our programs to ensure a safe and educational program. We've listed the ratios on each Program page, which range from 1:4 to 1:8 depending on the program.  It's important to note that Location Directors and Coaches-In-Training are not included in those ratios so the actual ratios are even lower!

Q

Communication is key

A direct line to your child

Rest easy knowing you'll be able to reach your child via a direct phone line to your Location Director on-site during camp hours. You'll receive the dedicated phone number in your confirmation email.

Office & Camp Communication

Our Leaders on-site at our programs communicate regularly with our Office Team to relay relevant participant information.

Hear it from us first

In the event of an accident or incident involving your participant, you'll receive timely and direct communication from our Team along with a detailed description of the event and the actions taken.

Lifeguard Relationships

We communicate daily with the lifeguards in the towers at our program locations to identify any potential safety concerns and implement a daily plan.

Relevant Program Info

While we try to minimize the number of emails we send, you will receive all the important program information prior to your first day as well as relevant program updates throughout the week.
